Book Review – I Don’t Want Curly Hair

Written and Illustrated by Laura Ellen Anderson

“NO! I do NOT want this BIG curly hair! It’s messy and silly and just plain UNFAIR!”

Lauren Ellen Anderson

Anyone with curly hair will immediate relate to this book. Because curly hair IS messy and silly and unfair at times. This is a brilliant story that has huge appeal with it’s gorgeous illustrations and fun rhyming text.

The illustrations are one of the first things that will appeal to you. Seriously, check out this next one. I just love how the words are integrated into it – the differing curly texts add to the wonderful creative feel.

The story is pretty self explanatory – it follows a girl who doesn’t want her curly hair and will go to any length to straigten it. A feat many of us can relate to.

“I want my hair STRAIGHT. I want my hair… smooth. I want it to flow through the air when I move.”

It revolves around the theme of trying to be something we’re not. It also has a great little twist at the end with a perfect lesson that reminds us to be who we are.

I just can’t get enough of those wonderful curl illustrations – reminding me of one of my favourite recent kids movie – Brave.

A book that all kids will love – especially ones with curly twirly twisty curls.
